What’s Marketing?
Marketing is everything! Marketing is how we deal with each situation on our daily routine! But if we refer to companies and how they operates in order to achieve benefits and according to some definitions (as reference, of course) the meaning of Marketing by Oxford’s Dictionary is “the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising”. Another similar meaning provided by Wikipedia, for instance, is “the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers for the purpose of selling a product or service”; therefore, both are sharing the purpose of “selling a product or a service”. Do not mind which one would be the right one, because even giving a service is selling a product.
In a nutshell, the fact is to pursue the goal of creating new needs within the society, achieving at the same time, the gladness of loyal customers, as well as unusual customers. To make us a clearer idea about the difference between both, we have to consider as unusual customers the ones who likes some of the products sold and when they go shopping will definitely pass by the shop, and most of the times will finally buy something, but those are not hardly feeling what the brand really wants to put across: Its Value as a brand; because those ones are pushed by their budget, by their emotional situation and also by external suggestions, but in reality, all of they are not actually, hard trackers of any brand at all.
Wherever and depending on who are you asking for this branch of science, will tell you different meanings based on their own experiences, on their own comprehension of market needs and actually, in accordance of their knowledge of its evolution along the history, ought to Marketing had needed to improve daily developing new sales plans at every time, in order to cover constantly changes suffered into society, involving in its definition (society): potential customer’s age, growing sectors, new opening markets, social nets, advertising, industry, communications, and a long etc. of factors.
I have already introduce one of the most important concepts of doing marketing, which includes different social sciences mixed to create very planned strategies in order to, firstly, split up the society in sections to select finally the best targeted customers segment, what will prevent the company of spending unnecessary money, and secondly, saving time. This concept is named “Branding”, and we will come back to this subject as we will soon see.
So, truly yes, the meaning of the word Marketing involves scientific methods which aims to study how to make the customer (public and/or private, depending on the operating sector) feel that they are the most important partner for the company and where they are the final meaning of why the brand is working for, and also why the brand is still alive within a period of time where many companies are getting fired employees, others have already closed, and much more of them are moving their business (specially manufacturing plants with the intention of reducing manufacturing costs) abroad to find out new opportunities overseas adapting industrial processes to new societies, investing in new machines, equipment and of course, looking for lower labor costs.
However, lots of worldwide companies have strongly adapted to changes without moving out, continuing their business tasks with not too much investment, being loyal with their mission and services along years. Why? Many reasons are possible, but in my opinion, the first one is that these sort of companies had been taking care of their final customers, ensuring at all times the accomplishment, with minimum costs, of goals established on the first planning stage, and specially because some staff member (supervisor, manager, sometimes other staff involved into project development) has dealt with the customer building up excellent partnerships based on confidence, based on “today its you, tomorrow its me” or even sharing common interests for a near future, with the possible chance of co-working into an upcoming and well rewarded project.
Finally, it is still to be seen and, as a main key of this first introduction to marketing, specially what concerns to Branding, the point which will tip the scales between achieving benefits, increasing on this way company’s budget, or losing money. It is empathy. Everyone knows what it means and everybody is able to understand its meaning without words; empathy are positive feelings, empathy is confidence, empathy is someone who understand you better than you actually knows. Empathy is an abstract concept, is an untouchable emotion what is able to bring big profits back to companies. So, plan developers should jump into customer’s mind and, first of all, know surely what are customer’s needs and the second one is to get them a fancy feeling acquiring any product/s of the company.
